There is an incredible increase in the telecommunication industry in the past ten years, and the number of smartphone users increased reaching almost 1 billion. Smartphones have more advanced computing ability and connectivity than a feature phone and they take up a large market share. The most used mobile platform in China is Android. About 38% of smartphones users choose Android OS in China because of their lower prices and convenience. iPhone, another great smartphone, is increasing from less than 2% in 2007 to around 29% in 2012. The biggest problem for iOS is the Chinese habit of not paying for software, making it difficult to improve the apps dedicated to the Chinese audience.

The following chart show the app growth for both Android and iOS by country ( Q1 2011 and Q1 2012). There is no doubt that Chinese mobile users are ready for the launch of several mobile apps.

The following chart is about the new iOS and Android mobile subscribers. We can see that the gap between United States and China is becoming smaller. Maybe in the near future China will be the country with the largest app market in the world.

Access to Internet through mobile devices

The main way to connect to Internet on mobile phones in China is still GPRS, because of 3G’s higher cost. This is why it’s crucial that your mobile website loads fast. This is why you need to adapt your desktop website to mobile devices.

One of the most popular browsers in China is UC. Currently, it has more than 300 million users and it’s available for all major OS including iOS/Android/Symbian/Java/Blackberry.Taking into account that mobile internet is used every day by more and more mobile users, you should seriously think about creating a mobile optimized website or an app for your business.

Although China is becoming the biggest smartphone market, exceeding the North American smartphone market, Sino-Mr reveals that 70% of the sold smartphones in China are manufactured by autochthonous brands. Why do Chinese brands sell so much smartphones? The answer is quite simple: because of their low price.

Brands like Huawei, ZTE or Xiaomi are selling smartphones with really great characteristics for just a couple of hundreds of yuans, this way meeting the needs of all kinds of buyers, including the ones that live outside big cities and have reduced salaries.

Currently, Samsung is the leader of the ranking, with 15.5% of the market share. It’s followed by Lenovo, Coolpad, Huawei, ZTE, Nokia, Gionee, K-Touch, Apple and HTC. As you can see, the six brands that rule the Chinese market are: Lenovo, Coolpad, Huawei, ZTE, Gionee and K-Touch.

A large part of their success is due to the fact that the three biggest telephone operators – China Telecom, China Unicom and China Mobile – sell these phones acting as perfect sales channels. More than 50% of the mobile phones sold by the Chinese telephone operators are manufactured by Chinese brands.

As the Chinese brands are becoming more and more popular with every day that passes, Samsung is losing its hegemony in the Chinese smartphone market. We have to take into account that Samsung’s cheapest smartphone is over 1500 yuans (245 dollars), which is the top price of the Chinese-branded smartphones. Apple, on the other hand, will experiment a substantial decrease in the Chinese market share, but this won’t bother them too much since their products are targeted for another type of audience.
